Hemp is of the same plant genus as marijuana and some people assume this means hemp has the same psychoactive characteristics. The psychoactive nature of marijuana stems from its THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content, which only exists at a negligible level in hemp. Hemp typically has a maximum THC content of 0.01%, which is considerably lower than the EU legal limit of 0.2%, and completely different to marijuana’s THC content of about 12%.
The THC levels are higher in whole hemp seeds, as THC is concentrated in the shell of the seed. We work with de hulled hemp seeds and hemp protein powder which contains very small trace of THC. A customer would need to consume more than 250-300g of seeds per day for a small chance to fail a drug test. We recommend customers to take 30-40g of the product per day.
If you are an athlete, we would recommend checking with the regulating body to identify their position regarding THC content in Hemp products. It looks like there is a very small chance that you could test positive for THC, but this is something that we have never actually tested our Hemp products for at Sevenhills Wholefoods. In light of this, we would recommend consulting your GP on the matter, or to carry out additional research online to clarify your concerns.
